Lost Poets' Forest

PROLOGUE

Poet wears an elegant tuxedo, huge salmon bow tie under his neck, dress shoes and red French beret on his head. He runs into the stage which pretends to be the middle of dark forest. He screams next poems.

Poet:

             Help! Help! Robbery!

             Where is the helpful delivery?

My new poem has been stolen!

             Surely by this evil forest!

             My heart is broken!

He wonders for a moment. Then he starts to walk – from tree to tree.

           Or maybe that is devil?

Or maybe my characters ran away?

           Or evil new level!

Who is going to perform today?

Magical forest, maybe a theatre of everyday,

Theatre of banality, triviality, stupidity…

A moment of silence.

Ah! Reality does what it wants.

Forefathers' Eve today, time to go nowhere.

Leaves without looking through his shoulder.

CHARACTERS:

Poet

Prince

Princess

Mermaid

Ghost 1

Ghost 2

Ghost 3

Witch

Sorcerer

Ugly Duck

Bear

Ballerina

SCENE 1

The same forest. The light in the middle of stage. Prince and Princess appear there. They wear typical medieval clothes.

Princess:

                      My ruddy lover!

Do not build me a castle cover,

But throw a promise under my feet.

That is where roots and gods meet.

I will be yours forever. I will love you forever.

You will not experience any pain, until you are loyal –

I will not die ever.

Prince lands on his knees. He kisses her hands. Then he puts his head on the ground.

Prince:

I promise to serve faithfully, oh madam!

You are life, paradise, sugar, and constant ecstasy.

You were chosen to be my wife also by my heart.

He mumbles under his nose.

I cannot run now; I must take part.

This game is called politics and MARRIAGE.

Prince and Princess leave. In the darkness of forest, in the right, the shabby algal-blueberry Mermaid emerges. Her black hair is dishevelled. She leans insecure, slowly into the side of light in the middle of stage, but she does not reach the central point. Ominous laughter, which brings you goosebumps. Suddenly she disappears like she used the Cloak of Invisibility.

SCENE 2

The same forest. Ghosts appear – each one comes from the different side. Pale faces, grey dirty torn clothes, the peasant style. Shackles on legs and arms. Whole scene they are walking. Their voices are melodious like antic Greek choir.

Ghost 1:

Eleven months –

Handcuffs of pure hurt…

Ghost 2:

Eleven months –

Handcuffs of pure hurt…

Now I am one of ghosts

Living in a desert…

Of this dark forest.

Ghost 3:

Eleven months –

Handcuffs of pure hurt…

Now I am one of ghosts

Living in a desert…

Of this dark forest.

Got to be honest –

This is a bloody

Rainforest.

Ghost 1:

Darkness screams.

Ghost 2:

Trees bleed.

Ghost 3:

Evil sings.

Ghost 1:

Moss stings.

Ghost 2:

Choir of ravens yawn.

Ghost 3:

Devil may pray.

They go out. Everybody in the different side, perpendicular to roads they came from.

SCENE 3

The change of scenario. Cemetery. Old chapel, with a hole in the roof. The same light in the middle of stage, which lights up the old altar, where is a magical book now, crystal ball, boiler of sorrel soup, a plate of cakes and two kettles – one with water, another one with tea.

Witch:

Poem about sunshine of your hair -

That is what I will give you now, my man.

Until we do not hear any voices.

„Your hair like silk, which reflects wings of butterflies.

Even Mermaid will bend to smell and swim in skies…”

He interrupts her. In the meantime, Mermaid puts her head round the backstage and curiously watches whole scene.

Sorcerer:

Silence, woman! This is not a good time for this!

Forefathers’ Eve today. Souls food cannot miss.

               Poems time is… well… in the summer…

That is when we can to heaven doors hammer…

Now we must start our witchcraft night.

Come, wife! You have a job to do. Put a spell.

Witch:

Do I really have to?

Sorcerer:

Yes, you have.

Witch:

Are you sure…? Is it…? Is it certain…?

Sorcerer:

Do not tease me…

Witch:

All right, all right, sweety…

She comes closer to the open book. She reads a spell.

Witch:

„Crumb, plum, one drum, green rum,

Dragonfly wings, orange, cloves, and leather gloves,

Tentacles, it will be a healthy spell like vegetables!”

They listen to the silence for a moment, but nothing happens. They look at each other. Sorcerer scratches his head. He is upset.

Sorcerer:

It did not work… Does it mean that all of ghosts are dead…?

Mermaid hides. We can only hear her evil laughter from the backstage.

SCENE 4

Stage magically comes back to the previous state. Dark mysterious forest again.

Ugly Duck:

Were you calling me Bear?!

Bear:

What?! Me?! No!

He stands on his hind legs and continues to speak.

Bear:

Ah! You speak! And me too!

                       What a wonder?!

SCENE 5

Ugly Duck and Bear stay in their positions. Princess with Prince come in arm in arm, Mermaid follows their lead. Next couple – Sorcerer and Witch. Three Ghosts go next, carrying handcuffs still. Everybody meets in the middle of stage and stand around Ugly Duck and Bear. Everybody looks at one another. Everybody is surprised by the presence of others. Nobody understands anything.

SCENE 6

Poet goes to the forest, dressed like at the beginning, but this time his beret is purple.

Poet:

            Characters of my new poem!

Ladies and gentlemen – get to know each other!

            Smell this family odour!

How good to see you all gathered!

Until anybody was able to make a move, Ballerina runs into the stage, dancing. She does somersault in the air by the way.

Ballerina:

Come, lover, it is time to go home!

                   Theatre closes in five minutes!

She flies away from the stage. Everybody leaves. Nobody still understands nothing.

EPILOGUE

Poet:

            Moon shines blue.

            Time has no clue.

            You may be brand new!

            And such miracles are possible

            Only

                        to-

                                night.

He leaves the stage. Curtain falls.
