Note No. 46. William Shakespeare, Mary Stuart, Castle in Windsor, Oxford and Meaning of History

2nd September 1820

Can fiction (or drama) be a student’s book about history? That is what I am thinking about tonight. It is late. William fell asleep, stopped groaning. I would stroke those blond hair, but I do not want to wake him up. Flames dance on his face pretty. He is no longer suffering, he fell asleep. And new day will raise tomorrow, maybe his body will not feel any pain anymore.

Oh, he bite his moustache… Like he knows that I write and think of him…

Coming back to first sentence of this note… I have read King Lear by William Shakespeare today, and a little bit of his Chronicles. I really like this English writer. Maybe my William is his new incarnation… Maybe that is Romeo who never died… Anyway, I really like Mary Stuart’s story. I would love to say something about it someday… But I am not in mood today…

Or maybe today… After one moment of reflection… Yes, I like Shakespeare and the Queen of Scots, not England, my namesake. Mary was a tragic personality, even Shakespearean, but extremely inspiring, full of enthusiasm, energy and of course she was a Catholic just like me!

When I read or watch the plays of the playwright mentioned above, I think that it is definitely some kind of historical student’s book. I feel like it increases my knowledge of the English isles. It is obvious that every word and act are not authentic, but the overall artistic shape says a lot about this era. Who knows, maybe someday somebody will create such an excellent source which will teach history and be fun...

King Lear is a good and entertaining book. No wonder the old man has gone mad. I would be probably furioso just like him if I lived in such a world without conscience. Anyway, as my previous hypothesis states… I think this is a good example of being a coursebook about history. I heard that the legend of this king was illustrated here extremely faithfully. The ending is also tragically touching... Nothing but impulses rule the world and there is no justice in it... Hell normally... There are also such ironic moments... Such a colourful poetry...

I also like Midsummer Night's Dream very much. Combining antique with the story of fairies? Genius! It fits nowadays! And Romeo and Juliet’s story is obviousness. But I would give it another happier fairy-tale style ending. I do not like endless sadness… To be or not to be? That is the question... I also do not like criminals… If you know what I mean.

Bien, c’est la bonne moment pour continuer mon l’histoire de voyage maintenant (Well, it is a good moment to continue my story of travel now). As I am writing about such old times, even ancient, maybe few words about the castle of William the Conqueror in Windsor today. The paintings, arts etc. that I saw there were delightful! Gardens too. And the castle is so old... The fact that it was built in the 11th century works on senses... A good place for some romances. Such a romantic and even gothic atmosphere it was.

I remember we went to Oxford next. Maybe someday you will study constitutional law there, my son. Anyway, it should not affect the study – who occupies what kind of social status – but I noticed that people definitely do not remember about equality there... It was only a moment, but I heard and saw that aristocrats are treated better at these universities. Oh, that is no good... Times are changing...

I could not leave it this way. I went to the chancellor right away, and my name only made him blush. They know perfectly well who they are dealing with and I was promised to gain a change. Ha! Wait patiently, men. Women will show you how to act correctly in politics soon.

I will tell you about further events later, my dear diary. The deepest black of the night has already come... Maybe next time I will describe the events of getting Shakespeare's chair? Who knows? As you probably guess, it was a real fight for it. Ah, I really had to have this chair...

Alright! Goodnight now!
