Note No. 32. Mountain News and the New Vision of Theatre

11th August 1819

The script is finished! But I have been writing it for last two weeks! Deux semenes! Literally! Ah, my dear diary! I was genuinely concerned about my new vision of theatre that I completely forgot to make next notes of report on knees for you! Forgive my negligence!

Ah! Misery! I am running out of paper! Few last sheets and I will have to abandon you! Ah! Misery! I will have to look for another diary! What will I do without you?! At most I will be coming back to you to recall good old times! Ah!

Time to take a sip of magical water.

Bien. I can describe my extraordinary idea of romance now. I have spent some time with my favourite servant Catherine on conversations lately. She told me so many fascinating folk tales, which the biggest poor pass orally from generation to generation. This way I heard so many Slavic and Lithuanian ballads. Catherine belongs to two different worlds – her father is Polish, shoemaker; the mother is Lithuanian, poor country girl. This way the servant is a treasure of various legends. These stories inspired me to write my drama, where scenes present legendary mermaids, forest nymphs, Forefathers’ Eve and feeding souls… These the oldest days are the most dark and mysterious!  I was deeply concerned about it all.

Ce n’est pas tout! Inspired by the presence of my kitty and haunted by a dream of hearing her talk, I decided to put such wonders in like talking animals. And poets are a symbol of our times. That is obvious. That is why my one-act play is made of all these elements. I am also planning to send it to the actress soon. She will know what to do with it the best.

My idea is innovative, I know. For the first time in history the theatre is exposed! Maybe not everybody will understand it the way it should be understood today but I am sure it is going to be the future of art. I had a dream! One day lines of theatrics and reality of life will be crossed. Art will exist for art only. Nowadays, the art called poetry or music is an expression of emotions.

Enough! I sound like a prophet-poet-teacher…

Now it is time to say few words about things that have happened lately, during my absence on your pages, dear diary, the dearest diary. Deux semenes sont beaucoup! Two weeks is a lot! My husband decided to become… a pianist! Yes, you see well. I was writing my drama; he was jealous about it and decided to create a perfect fitting music to my text. Why not, my dear lover! And that is not all! I think Juliette would love to become a mother, because she started to spend a lot of time with Mary; she is very motherly, tender, and empathetic now; and William’s brother obviously must always be around. After all, it cannot be any other way! In addition, I noticed recently that Catherine and coachman seem to get along very well, maybe even too well, and the best part now - she admitted that I must be right! I knew!!

This is how things are going, my dear diary. Few more weeks and we will be thinking about a comeback. Who knows, maybe something will even make things happen faster… In my experience, I know everything can happen here. Ah, this place really has magical aura stuck in the air.

Today everything is said and done. See you tomorrow, my dear!
