Note No. 47. Sightseeing of Rome and Strange Meetings at Night

3rd September 1820

Today I must write around current adventures. Well, William felt good enough to wish to see Colosseum today. So, we went there.

Large, romantic, eternal, and poetical building. But also full of buckets of blood, red sand, because it was favourite Romanians’ joy – to watch death. It was their beloved circus. Occasion of fun always awaited. There is nothing like watching how bodies of slaves and Christians are being torn apart. Delight for them, barbarity for me... My poor little brothers and sisters… It happened often that elder men and women ended their lives under paws in places like this. I think I can still hear this cheep of crowds; crunch of bones and the smell of blood will be stuck in the air forever. This stain will never be cleaned by humanity. Also, those scenes when similar people had to fight with each other and only one could win… Only to make crowds happy… I see it all here.

What hits me the most is the cross put on necks of pagans. Under Nero persecuted…  In the end greatness of Rome fell thanks to the same earlier oppressed hands. And Vatican is not too far away from Rome today… I must go there someday… Such a masterpiece made by Michael Angelo just must be seen.

I am also wondering… Are here any signs of slave rebellions? I must learn something more about it…

I have also wanted to go back to viewing terrace and see Forum Romanum again today (must see place just after arriving to this city). Ancient houses, streets, temples, thousands of columns – this is nothing but ruin today. Old life is paused. Today only a soul can get lost here. At midnight. In the moonlight…

How can life go on if the heart of Rome stopped?

Despite all… Somewhere in depths of haze it can be seen and heard… Old power is still smouldering. To see while watching, you must open your heart for the old world. That is when you can see grand buildings, expensive lady’s robes and Caesar’s aromas can be smelled. It is all still here. You only have to learn to notice what cannot be seen at the first gaze…

At the end of this trip, we were served with a local speciality - coda alla vaccinara. At first me and my lover could not get enough. We asked qu'est-ce que ce? A meal made of cow tail… Oui, I felt my head started to spin around when I heard it… That is why I got ice cream. I have never had something like this in my mouth before. In addition – that is a safe dessert. I must get it again tomorrow. Vanilla!

Ah, I have not described my latest dream yet… A man in black cape visited my chamber last night… I did not see his face, only black clothes… And he said mysteriously… Be blessed, poetical woman. I am Shakespeare, William Shakespeare. A founding father of new form and a teacher for your work.

That is not all. He came to me, put a head on my head and said like to his favourite daughter – Victims of stolen time… Remember – God rewards righteous people.

That is when I woke up, feeling pressure on my skull and strange presence in my room.

That is all now. Vale.
