Note No. 50. The Visit of a Painter

6th September 1820

Today I must spend a moment to relax and reflect. I am in a state of soul that constantly reminds me of where I am. A city like Rome leaves a glow on minds and weave a long thread of the past and tradition until now...

Today we were visited by an unusual guest in our villa - the famous Canaletto, an Italian painter, and a smart man. I have already seen his works at the Royal Castle. My brother appreciates him very much. Now he is passing through Rome, he rushes to Venice, to his family. He stays with us and it is genuinely nice. My brother's court painter is almost a family!

I will spend some time talking with him, and that is great. Artist and such a smart human! Today we talked about the Greek texts of the early Christians. He was reading it some time ago. He said he would bring me some translations. Unfortunately, I do not know Ancient Greek... But I would like to know these texts. I heard that these texts are pretty. Almost like love stories, some are light, playful, and others still resemble Franciscanism with a love of nature and birds. Ethical-theological-philosophical texts will also be found. They are hapilly stored in Rome, so I need to get to know it. After what I heard, I conclude that it will be a diverse and interesting reading. Some anthologies in French would make me incredibly happy.

Anyway, maybe it will inspire me, and I will write a letter to my brother... And maybe I will also write a poem and send it to him... I have not written anything for a while. I have to try. Maybe I will use mythological themes? For example... The love of Cupid and Psyche? Or maybe a description of Roman ruins? Or maybe word-painting of frescoes and sculptures? We will see, we will see...

Canaletto wants to paint a new painting, he told me today. He is fed up with our capital city and wants to paint his native Venice this time. My brother likes aquatic views, maybe he would buy this painting too. Anyway, I also recently bought a few treasures – Rembrandt’s and Leonardo da Vinci’s works of art. It will look beautiful in our Ballroom. Maybe someday we will move it to a special building... But today I only see it there. We will see what the future holds...

Oh! William has just started playing piano and Rosie is meowing load! Concerts! Okay, I must finish soon and listen to them. Besides, we have a guest... It is not that late... It is not proper to sit alone in the chamber for too long...

Anyway, this visit was possible only thanks to William. He is the one who invited him to us. Oh my Willy knows how much I value artists... My dear little angel!

Tomorrow English-Italian topics. Oh, I still have a lot to tell...

Until tomorrow!
